Maldives BA – Suspension Lifted

We are pleased to inform you that the suspension of the Badminton Association of the Maldives has been lifted, effective 03 December 2025. You will find further information below.

Timeline

On 20 May 2025, the Badminton Association of the Maldives (BAM) was suspended following a decision by domestic sport authorities to replace the elected leadership with an interim committee (see related Notice).

The BWF engaged with domestic stakeholders – the Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) and the former BAM leadership – to put in place a Working Group tasked with 1) amending the BAM constitution, and 2) organising elections.

In the subsequent months, the Working Group was able to put forward an amended version of the BAM constitution. The document received support when it was shared for consultation with the local badminton community.

Following the progress made by the Working Group, a group delegated by the BWF Council decided to create an exception to the BWF suspension, allowing players from the Maldives to register and participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments (see related Notice).

On 01 November 2025, the BAM General Meeting unanimously approved the amended version of the BAM constitution.

Then, on 22 November 2025, elections took place with observers from the BWF and from domestic stakeholders. A new leadership for the association was elected.

In light of the above, on 03 December 2025, the Council-delegated group responsible for overseeing the suspension to BAM has decided to lift the suspension imposed on BAM, allowing it, once again, to enjoy BWF membership rights.

The BWF is grateful to Maldivian sport authorities – particularly the Maldives Olympic Committee and the Commissioner of Sports – for their support in solving the dispute affecting BAM. The BWF also extends its gratitude to the members of the Working Group who made this possible.
