Sustainability
The BWF has a leadership role as a world governing body for a global sport.
Sport and sports organisations have an important status in society and we understand that with this special status, there are important responsibilities. This includes supporting actions now, that take into account the needs and aspirations of future generations.
As a member of the global community of sports organisations, we have a responsibility for implementing sustainable development practices (environmental, social, economic) and influencing our community for positive change.

Social Sustainability – safe, inclusive, accessible badminton
Over the last 20 years, BWF has implemented a wide range of badminton participation programmes. Badminton is a safe, inclusive and accessible sport for all.
Inclusion is one of the six BWF values – “Embracing diversity and inclusion demonstrates we are a part of a global badminton community and that our sport remains welcoming and accessible for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds“.
BWF is committed to ensuring a more inclusive, fairer and more sustainable future. This and the accessibility of badminton for both indoor and outdoor play is key to participation in our sport.

Our Approach
Our approach to sustainability is described in two documents:
1) Sustainability Policy – the overarching policy;
2) Sustainability Strategy (2025 – 2035) – the action plan structured around four pillars:
- Governance & Leadership
- Carbon Footprint – BWF operations
- Sustainable Practices – events
- Promotion, Education and Awareness, Advocacy
There are three goals:
- To systematically embed sustainable practices into its day-to-day operations.
- To work closely with event organisers to progressively incorporate sustainable event management practices.
- To promote sustainability, raise awareness across its membership and global badminton community, showcase best practice and encourage Members to implement their own sustainable practices.

Our Framework / Our Focus
The BWF Sustainability Strategy 2025 – 2035 is the framework for identifying and measuring the impacts (positive / negative) of core activities and implementing actions to achieve positive change around sustainable development. It is a roadmap for systematically introducing practices to enhance positive environmental, social, and economic impacts.
In the context of BWF, sustainability means minimising the environmental impact of our activities and at the same time, promoting and undertaking social responsibility initiatives and ensuring economic viability.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Reports – 2019 / 2023
BWF has completed two studies documenting the GHG Emissions Inventory of the corporate operations. The next inventory report will be conducted for the year 2025. The scope of the operations has been refined, and the 2025 report will include the travel for the delegates to the BWF AGM 2025. Previous studies did not include this in corporate operations.
