Events and Qualification

The BWF Para badminton World Championships usually has around 22 medal events however BWF has consistently communicated that not all events will be in the  proposal to the IPC for Tokyo 2020. There is a limited number of places for each sport and a limited number of medal events.

The two new sports for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games had 60 athletes each (30 men and 30 women). BWF analysed the strength and depth of each Sport Class in Para badminton. The proposal submitted to the IPC was realistic and this focused on excellence, high performance, universality and gender equality.

The main principles to determine medal events for Tokyo 2020 were:

  1. Essence of badminton – showcasing our sport – singles / doubles / mixed doubles play
  2. Showcase excellence – this is about world class performances / high performance
  3. High entertainment value –  the most entertaining for spectators / broadcast
  4. Universality – ensuring diversity – impairment classes / regions of the world
  5. Equality  – has equal numbers of men / women competing in Para badminton
