Council Proposal: 3×15 Scoring System for Decision at BWF AGM 2026
The BWF Council has agreed to propose the 3×15 scoring system (with setting to 21) as the new official scoring format for badminton.
This proposal will be formally presented for a membership vote at the BWF Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday 25 April 2026 in Horsens, Denmark.
This follows the Council’s earlier decision on 8 November 2025, which was informed by several years of match data analysis, practical trials, and extensive stakeholder feedback.

Why is 3×15 Being Proposed?
1. More exciting and competitive matches
Reduced game length increases the likelihood of close scores and tight finishes. Data shows that 3×15 creates more ‘exciting points’ than other formats.
2. Faster progress to key ‘endgame’ moments
With fewer points needed to win each game, crucial moments arrive earlier, keeping players, spectators, and broadcasters more engaged.
3. Shorter and more consistent match lengths
3×15 supports better scheduling, maintains fan attention, and helps manage player workload.
4. Benefits for stakeholders:
- Players: lower injury risk, improved long-term career sustainability, more energy per rally, and better recovery between matches.
- Technical Officials: reduced fatigue and more consistent on-court performance.
- Fans & Broadcasters: more dynamic matches and higher-quality product.
- Host Organisers: more efficient staffing, stronger spectator engagement, and better event flow.
Evidence-Based Decision
The BWF analysed match data from BWF World Tour tournaments and BWF Major Championships between 2014 and 2024. The findings consistently show that 3×15 (setting to 21) offers the best balance between excitement, fairness, and match duration when compared with other formats tested.
