Update on the Suspension of the Badminton Association of the Maldives

The below is to provide you with an update regarding the suspension of the Badminton Association of the Maldives (BAM) following our Notice from 20 May 2025 (linked here).

In summary, while the suspension of BAM remains in force, players from the Maldives will be able to register and participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments for the coming three months, until 26 December 2025.

Timeline

On 16 May 2025, it was decided to suspend the Badminton Association of the Maldives (BAM) following a decision by domestic sport authorities to replace the elected leadership with an interim committee.

The BWF engaged with domestic stakeholders – the Maldives Olympic Committee (MOC) and the former BAM leadership – to put in place a Working Group tasked with 1) amending the BAM constitution, and 2) organising elections.

Over the past few weeks, the Working Group has agreed on an amended version of the BAM constitution, which will be voted on by the BAM membership in early October 2025. Elections are expected to follow in November 2025.

In light of the encouraging progress made by the Working Group, a Council-delegated group has agreed to create an exception so the BAM suspension, allowing players from the Maldives to register and participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments for three months, until 26 December 2025.

It is important to note that as of today, the suspension of BAM still stands, and will be reviewed once the BAM constitution has been amended and elections organised. Should the process fail, the Council may also elect not to renew the three-month exception allowing players to participate.
