Updates to BWF Laws and Regulations

The BWF Annual General Meeting was held on 26 April 2025, followed by a meeting of BWF Council on 27-28 April 2025.

The following is a summary of changes to the Laws of Badminton approved at the Annual General Meeting 2025, and a regulation update approved by BWF Council.

Laws of Badminton – Spin Serve

The spin serve is now permanently banned, as per Law 9.1.5, which now reads as follows:

“the server shall release the shuttle without adding spin, and the server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle;”

Regulation Update – Seed Withdrawal Movement Regulations – BWF World Championships 2025

The BWF Council approved the inclusion of seed withdrawal movement regulations for the BWF World Championships, following the successful implementation of similar regulations for the BWF World Tour starting in 2023. It also planned for implementation at Grade 3 tournaments later this year.
