Amendments to the Guidelines for Council: Role of Council, Duties of Council Members

Following two days of workshops in Kuala Lumpur on 27-28 September 2024, the Governance and Ethics Technical Commission (GETC) made recommendations to Council to amend the Guidelines for Council and Executive Board Procedures:

  1. Role of the Council (Clause 8)
  2. Duties of Council members (Clause 7)

The Council approved the amendments on 8 October 2024 and the updated regulations have been published on the BWF website.

Rationale

The amendments provide greater detail:

  1. on the Council’s responsibility for overall governance and strategic direction, its control and oversight functions related to finance, risk, audit and compliance as well as its monitoring of the direction and performance of the BWF and the reporting on this.
  2. on the specific duties of Council members – 16 points in total – Clauses 9.1 – 9.16.

Although elements of these existed in different BWF governance documents, the enhanced descriptions of the Role of Council and Duties of Council members are now located in the one document as Clause 7 and Clause 8.

Background to Being a BWF Council Member

With the potential for new members being elected to Council at the AGM 2025, it was important to make these improvements for potential nominees to be able to see a clear description of the role of Council and duties of Council members.

Part 2 of the Guide to the Council Elections 2025 also provides an overview of the role of Council and the duties of Council members. This aims to help nominees to better understand what it means to be a BWF Council member, in terms of requirements and time commitment.

The BWF also has a series of “questions and answers” on Being a Council Member.
