Tribute to Horst Kullnigg

BWF mourns the passing of former Council Member Horst Kullnigg who passed away on 29 December 2022 in Pressbaum, Austria, at the age of 81.

Horst Kullnigg had a lifetime involvement in badminton at the national, continental and world level and made significant contributions to the administration and development of the sport.

He was first elected to the European Badminton Union (EBU) in 1972 as representative of his Association, the Österreichischer Badminton Verband and he served as Badminton Europe’s Honorary Treasurer for 22 years (1986–2008).

Horst Kullnigg served six years as BWF Council member from 2003 to 2009, initially elected to the then IBF Council as the Continental Representative for the EBU in May 2003. Throughout his time as BWF Council member, Horst Kullnigg served on the Administration Committee, IOC and International Relations Committee and Finance Committee and was Chair of the Finance Committee from August 2008 until May 2009.

Over his long career in the sport, Horst Kullnigg received three BWF awards:

  • BWF Meritorious Service Award (1989)
  • BWF Distinguished Service Award (1995)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award (2010)
