Para badminton Update 2021

The BWF has been working with various tournament hosts and other stakeholders on creating a Para badminton tournament calendar for 2021. The main priority was to ensure the completion of the last qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and to maximize participation.

Please note that BWF continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation around the world and tournaments going ahead are subject to local government authorities.

1.  Para Badminton Calendar 2021

Please ensure that you refer to the tournament prospectus for more information on each tournament once they are published on the BWF website (link).

2.  Paralympic Games Qualification

The Spanish Para Badminton International 2021, to be hosted in May, will serve as the last qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The BWF will publish an updated qualification timeline after consultation with the IPC.

Please also refer to the official qualification regulations on the IPC website (link) as it will be amended over the coming days. It is important that National Paralympic Committees are informed of this change once the information becomes available.

3.  Para Badminton Continental Championships

There will be no Para Badminton Continental Championships in 2021. BWF will extend the world ranking points gained from the previous edition until the next edition of the championships are played in 2022.

4.  Para Badminton World Championships 2021

Qualifiers for the BWF Para Badminton World Championships will be determined using the latest world rankings list to be published after the Irish Para Badminton International 2021. More information will become available at a later date.

Please be informed that there is no classification at the Championships. Players are required to have these classification status to qualify:

• Confirm (C)
• Fixed Review Date (FRD) – 1 November 2021 or after.

5.  Para Badminton World Rankings & Seedings

Tournaments from 2019 will continue to be on the ranking list until the next edition is played in 2021. The first update to the rankings will be after the completion of the 3^rd Dubai-Fazza Para Badminton International 2021.

Seedings for Para badminton Internationals and the BWF Para Badminton World Championships will follow the latest world rankings preceding the draw of the tournament.

6.  COVID-19

Participants including players and team officials are expected to follow any COVID-19 health and safety protocols introduced for each of the tournaments above. The Special Table of Offences and Penalties Relating to breaches of COVID 19 Safety Protocols (link) applies to anyone found in breach of COVID-19 protocol while participating at a tournament.
