Para Badminton Update

BWF wishes all of you a Happy New Year and hope you have all had a good start to the new year.

The start of 2021 continues to be a challenging time for all of us in the Para badminton community due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 situation. Although there is some light at the end of the tunnel and that vaccines will help bring the world back to a more normal condition, we still foresee that international tournament activity will be impacted throughout 2021.

While we are working to establish the best possible tournament calendar in the first half of the year, we also have a very high priority on the completion of the last qualification tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. It is important that participation opportunity in this tournament is maximized as well as having the necessary technical officials in place, including classifiers.

We are currently communicating with the host to find the best suitable week for the tournament to be held and will soonest possible, share this information with all players and stakeholders.

In addition to the last qualifying tournament, we continue to work on the rest of the Para badminton calendar. Further information will be communicated once we have finalized the consultation process with the various stakeholders.

BWF is fully aware that the lack of international tournament activity is challenging for all players, and it is for sure a frustrating situation. Realistically we however have to expect that the next quarters will continue to offer a difficult environment for tournament hosts to host international Para badminton tournaments and ongoing adjustments to planned activities may become necessary during this year also.

We therefore appeal to the patience, support and cooperation from all Para badminton players, and we will under the challenging circumstances seek to set up the best possible tournament program during 2021.

We hope you continue to stay healthy and safe.
