Para Badminton Tournaments 2021 / Para Badminton World Rankings

Please find below a letter from Paul Kurzo, Vice President Para Badminton and Thomas Lund, Secretary General, related to Para Badminton tournaments in 2021 and the Para Badminton World Rankings.

Dear Para badminton Players, Coaches, Teams, Member Associations, and other Organisations:

This year has been a challenging one for all of us in the badminton community.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the ability for badminton and Para badminton to be played in the latter half of this year—most notably, the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, and many of our Para badminton International Tournaments and Continental Championships. It has also meant a postponement of the start of new Para badminton World Circuit until at least 2022.

Unfortunately, this challenge will most likely continue into 2021, meaning a change to our originally planned schedule of postponed tournaments.

At this point, we are not able to confirm what next year will look like, but please know that we are actively working on options to provide opportunities for players to play again.

This includes the last qualification tournament for the 2020 Paralympic Games, and other world ranking tournaments to help players perform at their best at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2021.

Furthermore, the Para Badminton World Rankings have been frozen. A plan to ”unfreeze” these rankings will be communicated once there is a better understanding of the tournament calendar in 2021 and beyond.

We will update you once we have additional information, especially regarding the expected tournament programme for 2021.

In the meantime, please do what you can to stay healthy and safe.

Sincerely

Paul Kurzo, Vice President – Para Badminton / Thomas Lund, Secretary General
