Tribute to Annabel Pennefather

It is with great sadness that BWF learned today, that Annabel Pennefather, a member of the BWF Judicial Experts Group, passed away in Singapore this morning. Annabel was a member of the BWF Judicial Experts Group since it was established in May 2017, and served on a number of Integrity Hearing Panels over the last three years for the BWF.

Annabel was a practising lawyer with substantial experience in sports law and governance, and a Senior Consultant, Sports Law Practice, at Withers KhattarWong in Singapore.

She was an Advocate and Solicitor admitted to practice in Singapore and a member of the Law Society of Singapore and amongst others, her offices included being a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) Independent Integrity Unit’s Disciplinary Tribunal , President of the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Judicial Commission, an Independent Lawyer on the International Cricket Council’s Dispute Resolution Committee and a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation’s Ethics Commission.

Previous offices included being a Member of the IAAF Ethics Board, Vice President of the FIH, Vice President of the Singapore National Olympic Council, Chef de Mission for Singapore’s contingents at a number of major multi-sport Games such as the Manchester Commonwealth Games (2002), the Athens Olympic Games (2004), the Doha Asian Games (2006), the New Delhi Commonwealth Games (2010) and the Myanmar SEA Games (2013). She was also a Board Member of the Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee in 2010 and a Steering Committee Member for the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore.

In 2000 she was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the President of Singapore and in 2005 she was awarded the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Women and Sport Trophy for the Asian continent.
