Updates to the Laws of Badminton and Regulations

The BWF Annual General Meeting took place on Saturday, 27 April 2024, and the BWF Council met on Sunday, 28 April 2024, in Chengdu, China.

The following is a summary of changes to the Laws of Badminton and regulations from those meetings.

Changes to the Laws of Badminton – 27 April 2024 – linked here

Badminton – Clause 17.5.2 (Instant Review System) – Reference to the authority of the Referee to intervene if the Instant Review System (IRS) is inconsistent or there is an obviously incorrect decision given by the system.

Para badminton – New Clause 9.1.4.2 (Service) – Allowance for exceptions to Clause 9.1.4 (feet of server and receiver to remain stationary) for players with justifiable medical conditions.

BWF Statutes, Section 5.1 (General Competition Regulations)

 Badminton – Clauses 27.4.2 / 27.4.3 (Prize Money for Tournaments with Larger Prize Funds) – Prize money after each World Tour and Grade 3 tournaments to be distributed two weeks after the conclusion of the tournament (from three weeks), and an updated interest rate charged to the hosting Member Association for late submission to BWF of the required prize money.

AirBadminton – Clauses 1-4 (Sanctioning) – Sanctioning regulations added for AirBadminton tournaments, including provision of an overall structure. This ensures a governance structure for tournaments while BWF develops its Laws and competition regulations.

Badminton – World Junior Team Championships – Clause 12 – Clarification that the normal allowance for rest time between matches of the same player is not applicable in the Relay Team Event (new competition structure for the World Junior Team Championships).

BWF Statutes, Section 5.3.2 (Time Lines for Tournaments)

Badminton – World Junior Team Championships – A timeline is added to note that the World Ranking is used to determine the strength of singles players in the World Junior Team Championships (Relay Team Event).
